How did you meet? What was your first date like? Give us all the details!
I lived in Oklahoma and he lived in Texas. I traveled to Texas quite often to visit family so it was easy for me to consider dating someone from that state. So, I set up my profile and jumped in with both feet. I hadn’t been on the website long before I came across Jay’s profile. His smile was big and he looked so proud in the picture he posted of himself and his son. I had to make contact. I subtly sent him a smile showing my interest to see if he would reply. He did! There were several emails exchanged and when we discussed the distance between us Jay was a bit hesitant at first, but upon my explanation of my frequent travels to Texas to visit family and finding out that we only lived 2 hours apart we proceeded to get to know one another.
I will never forget the first time I heard his voice over the phone. That deep southern drawl of his is something that still makes me swoon! After several phone calls we decided it was time to meet each other in person!
In April 2015 Jay drove 2 hours to meet me. We had a wonderful dinner together and enjoyed strolling around a nearby college campus talking about our children (he has a 5 year old and I have a 9 year old), our church home and our love for the Lord. As the evening came to an end we both expressed how much we enjoyed our time together. Although our first date was short Jay made an impact on me. He would share later that when we said our goodbyes that evening he was parked at a gas station fueling up for the 2 hour drive back and I waved at him from my car as I drove away. Looking back at that moment now it’s hard to believe that we started a relationship from a distance. We both were very involved with our churches and our children’s extracurricular activities and time together took lots of planning.
Describe the moment you knew it was true love!
There was no doubt that God had made our paths cross when He did. God was answering both our prayers! One day we were sitting on the couch (we had been dating a little over a year at that point) and I remember telling Jay that I knew that I was to be his helpmate and that I would love nothing more than to be married to him raising our children together in a Godly home. November 13, 2016 Jay took me to Lawton for some hiking in the Wichita Mountains. We climbed up Elk Mountain and to my surprise he proposed at the top!!
What advice would you give other Christian Mingle members?
Jay and I had been dating a little over a year when his church started a 12 week marriage enrichment class. Although we were in different states and not married we decided to read and follow along with the book in the class. This book was a big influence in conversations we had about what marriage should be in the eyes of God. It also highlighted how marriage isn’t always easy and that it takes the work of two people and God.
Another bit of advice I have to mention is prayer and bible study. Praying together and reading God’s word together equips you to face life’s obstacles in your marriage. Through your commitment to God and your spouse you can have a marriage that is sweet!
