Sarah and James connected on Christian Mingle and instantly clicked. Although Sarah had passed over so many profiles, she saw James, and she wanted to respond. She knew it was true love when she met his eyes on their first date.
How did you meet? What was your first date like?
“James initiated conversation. I had passed over so many guys before. For some reason, this one just, I don’t know, I wanted to respond. He talked about roller skating. Haha! We talked for about two weeks through text message. Finally, we decided to go on our first date that third week. We went to the Putnam Museum in Davenport, Iowa. I remember seeing him pull into the parking lot. He had a loud, banged up truck, and he was tall, dressed in all black with a long trench coat. But I remember the first moment I looked at him in the eye and I knew immediately! It was very chill, with lots of fun conversation. James was funny and asked a lot of questions, really tried to figure me out. I love to talk, though, so I was all for it. I remember we went to a nice restaurant, ordered a cocktail and beer, and I definitely remember those bacon brussel sprouts! It was winter and very icy outside at the time. We stayed until they were nearly ready to close up. When we left I almost slipped on the ice. He helped me to my car and we went on our way. I smiled the whole way home! I think he did, too. He told me later his grandpa had called while he was driving home and he was so excited to tell him about our date.”
Describe the moment you knew it was true love!
“That first moment I saw his eyes on our first date. I know it sounds weird, maybe, but I have always believed God gave me foresight and intuition. I could just tell. Maybe a spirit feeling, I don’t know! Although, I doubt James would have the same answer as me. Haha!”
What can you tell us about the proposal?
“Oh boy! The proposal did not go as planned. I had recently moved to live near James since two years prior, we had been dating long-distance (about an hour and 40 minutes). He was living with the elders of the church while I lived in his apartment. I searched for months for an apartment; things got really stressful, and we had a lot of breakdowns. We got scared, and our faith was being tested harshly! After a tough breakdown one evening, James suddenly got the urge to go to his neighbor Liz’s house. He told her everything! She said, “James, you know what you need to do.” He went to his truck and got his camera lens bag out. Inside it was the ring. Crying on a couch and in sweatpants, James, still in raggedy old work clothes, got down and proposed. I got into a new apartment that very next week!”
What advice would you give other Christian Mingle members, who are still looking for love?
“Trust your instinct. Pray about matches. I kid you not. Pray for discernment and wisdom. Don’t try too hard, either. You can’t let your singleness and dating an idol in your life. Trust God, and say, “whatever Your will is.” If it’s meant to happen, it will.”
