Founded in 1845 in Augusta, Georgia, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has grown to over 16 million members who worship in more than 42,000 churches in the United States. Southern Baptists sponsor about 5,000 home missionaries serving the United States, Canada, Guam and the Caribbean, as well as sponsoring more than 5,000 foreign missionaries in 153 nations of the world. A Southern Baptist believes that in the spirit of Christ, Christians should oppose racism, every form of greed, selfishness, and vice, and all forms of sexual immorality, including adultery, homosexuality, and pornography. The Southern Baptist Convention works to provide for the orphaned, the needy, the abused, the aged, the helpless, and the sick. Further, the SBC speaks on behalf of the unborn, and contends for the sanctity of all human life from conception to natural death. You become a Southern Baptist by uniting with a Southern Baptist church, one in friendly cooperation with the general Southern Baptist enterprise of reaching the world for Christ. Typically, church membership is a matter of accepting Jesus as your Savior and Lord and experiencing believer's baptism by immersion.
We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God: true, immutable, steadfast, and unchangeable 2 Timothy 3:16-17 We believe that God is triune: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the Three are coexistent, coeternal, and equal in divine perfection 1 John 5:7 We believe that man, created in the image of God, by voluntary disobedience fell into the depths of sin and iniquity, bequeathing sin's nature and consequences to all mankind, with their accompanying loss of intended meaning and purpose Genesis 1:27; Romans 5:12 We believe that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us, took our place, and with His life's blood purchased the pardon for all who believe in Him John 3:16; Titus 2:14
Located in the heart of poverty, hopelessness, and violence, The Dream Center is surrounded by gang members who actively recruit young children into lives of violence and drugs. Poverty and addictions have sent many to live on the streets. The church ministers to gang members, drug addicts, unwed mothers and children without parents, motorcycle groups, taggers, AIDS victims, and various subculture, ethnic and nationality groups. It feeds the homeless and others in need and runs a halfway house for released prisoners. Close to 500 people are housed at the center and receive rehabilitation. Many other services are offered each week to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the community. The center has been said to epitomize a quote by Tommy Barnett, pastor of the Phoenix First Assembly of God Church, "Find a need and fill it, find a hurt and heal it."
The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) is an evangelical Protestant denomination within Christianity. Founded by Rev. Albert Benjamin Simpson in 1887, the Christian & Missionary Alliance did not start off as a denomination, but rather began as two distinct parachurch organizations: The Christian Alliance which focused on the pursuit and promotion of the Higher Christian life and The Evangelical Missionary Alliance, which focused on mobilizing "consecrated" Christians in the work of foreign missionary efforts. These two groups amalgamated in 1897 to form The Christian and Missionary Alliance. It was only much later during the mid twentieth century that an official denomination was formed.
